This Mid-Century modern home in South Orange, NJ integrates stepped terraces in the landscape, creating a dynamic, three-dimensional experience that negotiates with the subtle sloping topography leading up to the house. These topographic changes reflect the region’s geological history that formed the topography through the Watchung Lava Flows. In the rear of the home the landscape revolves around a recessed courtyard that contains plants found in the Tap Rock Glades that are endemic to this part of New Jersey. This unique ecosystems is highlighted in the courtyard through ten circular stainless steel planters. Three multi-stem Stewartia trees punctuate the courtyard offering a unique aesthetic in all four seasons throughout the year
