ROCKAWAYS, QUEENS, NEW YORK
Hurricane Sandy devastated many coastal areas in the NYC region. In particular, the Rockaways in Queens, New York, took the brunt of the storm. MoMA PS1 held an international open ideas competition for designers and artists to imagine a more resilient Rockaways. The scheme submitted by Balmori was one of the chosen winners. The entry addressed an observation that many inhabited coastal areas have flat beaches leaving the city and beachfront program exposed to violent storm events. Creating dunes would make these areas more resilient; however it could become an obstacle separating the community and activities from the coastal landscape. Occupy the Dune proposes this infrastructure be the center for civic activity, protecting the community while connecting it socially and ecologically.
